LAX takes airport security very seriously. You can speed up the process by following some simple guidelines before you go to the airport and while you are there.

Before Arriving

  • Do not pack or carry prohibited items. A current list can be found at www.tsa.gov. If you are not sure whether an item is prohibited, call the airport or leave it in the LAX parking lot.
  • Leave gifts unwrapped for inspection.
  • Avoid wearing anything that contain metal (such as zippers). These may set off the metal detector and slow your processing through the security checkpoint.
  • Limit carry-on baggage to one item plus one personal item, which includes laptops, purses, and camera cases. All other items will have to be checked or left in the LAX parking lot.
  • Identify all bags with ID tags.
  • Bring government-issued photo ID for any traveler over 18. No exceptions: you will not get a boarding pass.
  • Allow for extra time during the busiest travel times, such as the holidays and spring break. You will need extra time to get to the airport, to park at LAX, and to check in.

At the Airport

  • Do not leave your car unattended in front of the terminal. Please park in an LAX parking lot.
  • Do not watch other people’s luggage. This cannot be stressed enough. Also, never leave your own bags unattended.
  • Take off all outerwear (jackets, blazers, etc) and place in a bin at the security checkpoint. Also put any laptops in a bin, separate from their carrying case.
  • Remove all metal items such as jewelry, coins, cell phones, etc. in a carry-on bag or in the bin to save time at the checkpoint.
  • Always have your ID handy. You may be asked to present it at security and again when boarding the plane. Although it may seem like a nuisance, remember it is to make the plane safer for everyone by ensuring those who purchased a ticket and checked in actually get on the plane.
  • Do not joke about sensitive issues such as possessing a firearm or a bomb. Do not mention the word “terrorist”. Security is trained to react when they hear those words and it may result in jail time or fines.

The key is to remember to ask if you are not sure about something or leave it in the LAX parking lot. Security measures are in place for your protection and everyone else. Also, remember which LAX parking lot you parked in. Write it down, you may forget by the time you come back!
